South Devon Joint Formulary

 Brixham Harbour

The South Devon Joint Formulary is produced as a joint venture between primary and secondary care. It is an evidence based guide to prescribing across the South Devon Health Community.

The Joint Formulary has been designed as an advisory/guidance tool to assist in promoting cost-effective prescribing within South Devon. It is hoped that the Joint Formulary will cover 80-90% of prescribing and recognises that there will be instances where prescribing outside of the formulary will be necessary. For example, new patients registering with a practice on a non-formulary drug, specialised usage of a drug within secondary care. Where a specialist needs to prescribe outside the formulary and is requesting, for example a GP, to take over prescribing responsibility the specialist should explain why a non-formulary product is required.

The formulary covers all prescribing within the South Devon Health Community i.e. FP 10 prescriptions; Acute trust prescribing; FP10(HP) prescriptions; FP10D dental prescriptions.  Recommendations made to GPs, for example, in outpatient letters.
