Care Homes

Care Homes in Torbay

Torbay Care Trust commission services from 104 residential care homes and 18 nursing homes in Torbay.

Care homes for older people may provide personal care or nursing care. A care home which is registered to provide personal care will offer support, ensuring that basic personal needs, such as meals, bathing, going to the toilet and medication, are taken care of. In some homes more able residents have greater independence and take care of many of their own needs.

Some residents may need medical care and some care homes are registered to provide this. These are often referred to as nursing homes. Some homes specialise in certain types of disability, for example, dementia.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The Care Quality Commission (formerly Commission for Social Care Inspection) registers and inspects all care homes (and other adult social care and health services) against national minimum standards and gives them a quality rating (see below). Inspection reports are available to view on the CQC website or they can be ordered from the CQC order line on 0870 240 7535.

Torbay Quality Care Forum (TQFC)

The Torbay Quality Care Forum was set up in 2009. It currently represents 62% of all residential beds and 80% of all nursing beds in Torbay. The purpose of forum is to:

  • Provide Quality Care in Torbay
  • Engage regularly with all ‘good’ and ‘excellent’ homes in the bay
  • Offer assistance to ‘poor’ and ‘adequate’ homes helping them to reach ‘good’ status.
  • Identify market development opportunities
  • Meet regularly with Torbay Care Trust to ensure transparency in partnership working.
