Primary Care Trusts have performer lists for their area which names the GPs, Dentists and Ophthalmic Opticians who satisfy a range of criteria for working in the NHS.
These criteria stem from Government regulations and their purpose is to give an assurance to the public that every clinician working in NHS primary care is appropriately qualified, experienced and suitable for this activity.
A GP, Dentist or Optician may not work in the NHS unless they are included on a Performer List.
If they are on a Performer List of one PCT, then they may work in other parts of England, but they should be on the Performer list of the area in which they carry out the majority of their duties.
GP practices, Dental Surgeries and Opticians must check that any GP, Dentist or Optician they employ is included on a Performer List, and is entitled to work in the NHS before they start work.
